Barcode scanning and photo-assisted entry can reduce repetitive typing when you add an item. They start a draft; you still decide whether the identification and details match the item in your hands.

Choose the entry method that fits the item

A readable product barcode can help identify packaged products and some books or media. A damaged label, store sticker or unsupported identifier may not return useful details. Photo-assisted entry is another route when visual information helps, but an image cannot establish authenticity or hidden defects.

If a lookup fails, use manual entry. You can still record the title, cost and relevant details without a successful scan.

Verify before saving

Check the exact model, edition, size or variant. Review condition yourself, including missing accessories and whether the item works. Replace inaccurate suggested text and add the purchase cost you actually paid.

A barcode shared by several condition grades is not a sold comparable. A photo identification of a similar-looking model is not proof that your model sells for the same price.

Continue with research and economics

Use the record to research prices, distinguish active asking prices from completed sales, and estimate fees and shipping. Save it to inventory once the details are useful enough to recognize and manage the item.

Camera permissions, connectivity, service coverage and feature availability can affect assisted entry. Local item entry remains a practical fallback when research is unavailable. Scanning does not automatically list an item on eBay, Poshmark or Mercari.

Follow the first-item workflow and test scanning on your own phone with an item you can identify independently.
